What do people write on movie reviews? I don’t read them. I have probably read people’s opinion on some movies on Rotten Tomato or IMDB at some
point.
So I just saw Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind for the
second time and this time I was not bored (that's an understatement).
My first thought was, ooohhhkaaaay, here we go again with
the manic pixie dream girl lead because the film has to be exciting and
creative. Only to realize later on, she can be just as relatable.
How can people be in love at an astonishing level and still
not be right for each other? Why does that kind of configuration is even in
existence? What a waste right?
I certainly did not like it the first time I saw it. I guess
that’s why people give second chances. It’s because we change, and our
perspective changes.
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is a beautiful film. It
made me think. It made me imagine. It made me feel things.
The film used "basic", and transformed it to a fantasy. I mean, look
at Lacuna’s office. There wasn’t any effort to make it appear like a futuristic
brainy-thing-bleughk-trying-hard facility. It looked just like a regular “meh”
office that you pass by everyday.
I do dig some of Clementine’s outfit though. I wanted to
sorta bookmark her “as Mrs Hamlyn” look, if and when I have the opportunity to
go to a costume party. Boss can play 4 y.o. Joel Barish in his pajamas with yellow
airplane print.
I enjoy the hint of comic in its soundtrack. There wasn’t a
standout song though. For me all the background music was just to add to the
feelings. And not take away from the scene, do you get what I mean? I mean, do
you do that? When watching something, a movie or a TV show, and a really good
song comes up, and you have to pause what you are watching (if possible) to
find out what that song is? Do you do that?
And the irony that Mary had to have the procedure done on
her too. That was a ”nice” touch. See what I did there? It was nice. A bit
abrupt in my opinion though, but not exactly forced.
At the end, as much as I want to root for them, I was already
apprehensive. But maybe just like the second chance I gave this film, Clem and
Joel deserves it too.
Ps. They first used “Okay. Okay” (I’m looking at you John
Green and TFiOS)
